IGC raises 2025-26 world food grain output view by 31 mln tn to 2.46 bln tn

MUMBAI – The International Grains Council has revised its global food grain production forecast for 2025–26 upwards by 31 million tonnes to a record 2.46 billion tonnes, including increases in wheat, maize, and barley output, according to its monthly report released Thursday. Global grain consumption in 2025–26 is now expected to reach a five-year high of 2.42 billion tonnes, driven by increased food, feed, and industrial demand. The council had not published its monthly report in December.
The council has also raised its forecast for total year-end food grain stocks by 15 million tonnes to a five-year high of 634 million tonnes. The outlook for the global grain trade has been revised upwards to 446 million tonnes, from 442 million tonnes in November.
The global wheat production estimate has been raised to 842 million tonnes from November's projection of 830 million tonnes. The council estimates global wheat consumption at 823 million tonnes, up from 819 million tonnes in November. The forecast for carryover wheat stocks was also raised to 283 million tonnes from 275 million tonnes.
Global maize production is estimated to rise slightly to 1.31 billion tonnes from nearly 1.30 billion tonnes projected in November, according to the report. The council also raised its forecast for global maize consumption to 1.30 billion tonnes from 1.29 billion tonnes in November.
Global rice production forecast for the year remained unchanged from November at 543 million tonnes. On the other hand, the estimate for global rice consumption has been lowered by 1 million tonnes to 538 million tonnes in January, according to the report.
The forecast for world soybean production has been raised to 427 million tonnes from 426 million tonnes estimated in November. Global soybean consumption in 2025–26 is expected to rise to 432 million tonnes, compared with 431 million tonnes estimated in November. The soybean trade is seen at 187 million tonnes, unchanged from November, the council added. End
