MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar were steady in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh as there was limited demand at higher prices, traders said. Prices of the sweetener were not available in the key markets of Maharashtra as markets were shut on account of municipal corporation elections, they said.

Mills in Uttar Pradesh kept prices steady after raising them by around INR 40 per 100 kg this week, Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India said. Demand for sugar was limited at these higher price levels, Gupta said.

Kuvadia said that prices are unlikely to increase in the coming days as there is no demand from ice-cream and cold-drink manufacturers amid cold wave conditions in several parts of the country. Moreover, as sugarcane crushing is in full swing, there is no concern over supply, so prices will remain subdued, he said.

Sugar production in Maharashtra surged nearly 50% to 6.5 million tonnes as of Thursday from 4.3 million tonnes last year, the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories said. The state's production rose as sugarcane crushing jumped up nearly 47% to 71.8 million tonnes and due to a rise in sugar recovery rate to 9.0% from 8.8%. The state had 204 mills running as of Thursday compared with 196 mills last year, it said.

The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Flat at INR 3,800-INR 3,950 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 3,800-INR 3,950 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

At 1903 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was down 1.7% at 14.43 cents per pound. Sugar prices fell, tracking losses in crude oil prices on NYMEX. A fall in crude oil prices leads to decreased diversion of sucrose for ethanol production, increasing the availability of sugar.  End
