India's sugar output as of Thu up 22% YoY at 15.9 mln tn, says federation

MUMBAI – So far in the sugar season that started in October, mills in India have produced 15.9 million tonnes of the sweetener as of Thursday, up nearly 22% from 13.1 million tonnes produced in the same period a year ago, according to data from the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories. The sugar production has risen due to higher sugarcane yield and improvement in recovery rate to 9.0% from 8.8% last year.
As of Thursday, 519 mills were operational across the country, as against 514 units last year. The 2025–26 (Oct-Sept) sugar season has commenced on a strong footing due to early crushing operations and improved yield, the federation said.
The federation has pegged sugar production for the year ending September up over 20% at 31.5 million tonnes, with 11.0 million tonnes coming from Maharashtra, 10.5 million tonnes from Uttar Pradesh, and 5.5 million tonnes from Karnataka. Last year, India had produced around 26.2 million tonnes of sugar.
According to the state-wise details provided by the federation, sugar production in Uttar Pradesh as of Thursday was 4.6 million tonnes, up from nearly 4.3 million tonnes at the same time last year, even though sugarcane crushing decreased to 46.6 million tonnes from 47.3 million tonnes a year ago. Operational mills in the state numbered 119, lower than 122 mills that were operating last year. The average sugar recovery rose to 9.8% from 9.05% last year.
Sugar production in Maharashtra surged nearly 50% to 6.5 million tonnes as of Thursday from 4.3 million tonnes last year. The state's production rose as sugarcane crushing jumped up nearly 47% to 71.8 million tonnes and due to rise in sugar recovery rate to 9.0% from 8.8%. The state had 204 mills running as of Thursday compared with 196 mills last year.
In Karnataka, sugar production stood at 3.1 million tonnes, up from 2.7 million tonnes last year. As of Thursday, 76 mills were running in the state against 77 mills last year. The average sugar recovery in the state fell to 8.05% from 8.50% last year. End
