MUMBAI – Prices of wheat, maize, and rice remained unchanged Thursday due to lack of fresh cues, traders said. Prices of maize and wheat are expected to fall as new arrivals will start hitting the market in February, they said.

WHEAT prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 2,820 per 100 kilograms with no fresh cues, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Kochar expects wheat prices to fall in the near term as new arrivals will start in February. Prices of wheat in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, were steady at INR 3,000 per 100 kg, said Devendra Vora, a wholesale trader. Prices of wheat in Kota, Rajasthan, also remained largely steady at INR 2,550-INR 2,600 per 100 kg. Arrivals in the Kota market were 4,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), said Ravi Mehta, a local trader.

Traders and farmers expect wheat output for this rabi season to surpass the previous year's record high of 117.94 million tonnes, driven by higher acreage and favourable crop conditions. Some traders and farmers anticipate that the government might allow the export of wheat and wheat products in view of better supply.

Meanwhile, in its first auction since resuming open market sales of wheat, the Food Corp. of India sold 92% of the offered quantity to the market Wednesday. This is the first robust wheat sales in 2025-26 (Apr-Mar), as the agency had sold only 40% of the offered quantity in previous auctions. FCI had temporarily suspended wheat auctions last month due to weak demand amid comfortable market supplies.

On Wednesday, FCI offered 100,000 tonnes of wheat under the open market sales scheme, and sold about 92,000 tonnes. In many key states such as Punjab, Haryana, and Assam, buyers bought the entire quantity offered, indicating strong demand, sources told Informist.

Prices of MAIZE in Indore were largely steady at INR 1,780 per 100 kg due to lack of fresh cues, Kochar said. He expects maize prices to fall in the near term as new arrivals will begin shortly.

Prices of the main varieties of RICE were unchanged in Vashi. Prices of the 1401 and 1121 varieties of basmati rice were at INR 8,000-INR 8,200 per 100 kg and INR 8,400-INR 8,800 per 100 kg, respectively, Vora said. "There is demand for basmati rice, and prices will go up as and when demand rises," he said.

Prices of sona masoori rice, a premium non-basmati variety of rice, were also steady at INR 5,600-INR 5,800 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, said Ravi Shankar, a trader. "Prices are expected to remain steady for around two months, as there is very little demand in the market," Shankar said.  End
