MUMBAI – Futures contract prices of spices on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange were unavailable on Thursday as the exchange is shut on account of municipal elections in Maharashtra. Trading on the exchange will resume Friday.
On Wednesday, the most-active April contract of TURMERIC closed 1.7% lower at INR 17,200 per 100 kg. Prices fell pressured by expectations of higher acreage following favourable rainfall during the ongoing sowing season, Kedia Advisory said in a note.
The most-active March contract of JEERA closed 0.2% higher at INR 22,350 per 100 kg, due to a revival in festive-season demand and a sharp decline in acreage across the country, SMC Global Securities said. Jeera acreage in Gujarat, one of the key producers of the spice, fell to 398,438 hectares from 476,097 hectares a year ago as of Monday, data from the state agriculture department showed.
The most-active April contract of CORIANDER closed 0.5% lower at INR 11,176 per 100 kg as the market resisted a further upside, SMC Global said. However, "the outlook remains supported by festive season demand," the brokerage said. End
