NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of all the spices were up on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange on Wednesday. Prices of turmeric rose amid tight supply conditions, while those of jeera were up because of weather-related disruptions and delayed sowing, analysts said. Prices of coriander were up on festival demand, they said.

At 1554 IST, the most-active April contract of TURMERIC was up 0.2% at INR 17,550 per 100 kg on good buying support, given the upcoming festival demand coupled with supply tightness, SMC Global Securities said in a note. Market sentiment remains firm as both farmers and stockists have significantly reduced their inventories, limiting near-term availability ahead of arrival of the new crop, Kedia Advisory said. However, the rise in prices can be limited as fresh arrivals are expected to start by the end of January.

The most-active March contract of JEERA was up 0.2% at INR 23,740 per 100 kg with strong export demand, festival season buying, and lower sowing levels supporting the overall market tone, SMC Global said. In Gujarat, sowing was at 399,000 hectares, down 14.2% from a year ago, as uneven rainfall has slowed field preparation, making this one of the slowest sowing seasons in recent years, Kedia Advisory said.

Supply tightness due to logistical constraints in India and West Asia, along with some improvement in demand from Gulf countries and China, continued to lend support, though buying remains price-sensitive, the brokerage said.

The most-active April contract of CORIANDER was up 0.1% at INR 11,234 per 100 kg on festival season demand, which is expected to keep prices high, SMC Global said. However, the upside may be capped by weak buying interest at elevated levels. According to the brokerage, prices will face resistance on the upside and are likely to consolidate in the INR 11,150-INR 11,290 per 100 kg range.
