MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra were steady Wednesday amid limited demand, traders said. Prices of the sweetener in north India are likely to rise due to wedding season demand in the second half of the month, they said.
Mills in Uttar Pradesh kept prices steady after raising them by around INR 40 per 100 kg in the past two days, Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India said. Demand was limited at these higher price levels, Gupta said.
"There were also rumours of a minimum selling price hike for sugar, which could also support prices," Gupta said.
Mills in Maharashtra kept sugar prices steady, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Prices are likely to fall in the coming days as there is no demand from ice-cream and cold-drink manufacturers amid cold wave conditions in several parts of the country. Moreover, as sugarcane crushing is in full swing, there is no concern over supply, so prices will remain subdued, he said.
The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:
--Flat at INR 3,800-INR 3,950 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 3,800-INR 3,950 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 3,845-INR 4,005 per 100 kg in Mumbai
--Flat at INR 3,750-INR 3,835 per 100 kg in Kolhapur
At 1625 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was up 0.3% at 14.94 cents per pound. Sugar prices rose, tracking gains in crude oil prices on NYMEX. A rise in crude oil prices leads to increased diversion of sucrose for ethanol production, decreasing the availability of sugar. End
