Cotton Association ups India's 2025-26 production estimate to 31.7 mln bales

MUMBAI – The Cotton Association of India has raised the country's cotton production estimate for 2025-26 (Oct-Sept) season by 750,000 bales to 31.7 million bales (one bale equals 170 kg). The association had earlier pegged the total cotton output at 30.9 million bales.
The association puts out its estimates every month on the basis of input received from members of 11 cotton growing state associations and other trade sources. Production of cotton in the north zone, comprising Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan, is estimated at 3.05 million bales in 2025-26, and in the central zone, which includes Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh, it is projected at 18.70 million bales.
Production in the south zone, comprising Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, is estimated at 9.40 million bales, according to the association. Odisha and other states are likely to contribute 350,000 bales and 200,000 bales, respectively, to the country's total cotton production.
Total supply of cotton in the 2025-26 season is estimated at 42.76 million bales, against 39.26 million bales in the previous season. The association has estimated imports in 2025-26 at 5.0 million bales, same as its earlier projection, but up 900,000 bales from last year. The cotton body sees India's cotton consumption in the year to September at 30.5 million bales, it said in the release.
It has pegged exports at 1.5 million bales this year, up 300,000 bales from the previous year. The closing stock as on Sept. 30 is estimated at 10.8 million bales, according to the release.
