MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh rose again on Tuesday as demand improved at lower rates, said traders. Mills in Maharashtra kept prices steady, they said.
In Uttar Pradesh, mills raised rates by INR 25-INR 30 per 100 kg as demand picked-up and also as prices have started to rebound after a significant fall of INR 100-INR 120 per 100 kg in January, Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India said. "There were also rumours of a minimum selling price hike for sugar, which supported prices," Gupta said. In the second half of January, prices could see in uptick on wedding season demand.
Mills in Maharashtra kept sugar prices steady, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Prices are likely to fall further in the coming days as there is no demand from ice-cream and cold-drink manufacturers amid cold wave conditions in several parts of the country. Moreover, as sugarcane crushing is on in full swing, there is no concern of lower availability, so prices will remain subdued, he said.
The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:
--Up INR 25-INR 30 at INR 3,800-INR 3,950 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh
--Up INR 25-INR 30 at INR 3,800-INR 3,950 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 3,845-INR 4,005 per 100 kg in Mumbai
--Flat at INR 3,750-INR 3,835 per 100 kg in Kolhapur
At 1830 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange were steady at 14.84 cents per pound. End
US$1 = INR 90.19
