MUMBAI – Futures contracts of turmeric fell while those of jeera and coriander rose on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange on Tuesday. Prices of turmeric slipped due to expectation of fresh crop arrivals at the end of January, analysts said. Prices of jeera and coriander rose due to firm festival demand amid a decline in acreage in the ongoing sowing season, they said.
The most-active April contract of TURMERIC fell 0.4% to INR 17,800 per 100 kilograms due to expectations of arrivals of the freshly harvested crop by late January, analysts at SMC Global Securities said. "For the 2025–26 season, turmeric acreage is estimated at 302,000 hectares, up about 4% year-on-year, with fresh production projected at 1.14 million tonnes," Kedia Advisory said in a note.
However, the fall in prices is likely to be capped due to the ongoing festival demand amid supply tightness, SMC Global said. Prices are also supported by firm export demand, particularly from Europe and the US, with exports during Apr–Oct rising marginally on year, while imports declined sharply, Kedia Advisory said.
However, fresh arrivals of the new turmeric crop are likely to arrive in spot markets late January, which could put pressure on prices, SMC Global said.
The most-active March contract of JEERA was up 0.2% at INR 23,810 per 100 kg due to a revival in festival demand with Makar Sankranti and Pongal taking place this week, SMC Global said. Prices also rose due to strong export demand and a sharp decline in acreage across the country, Kedia Advisory said in a note. Jeera acreage in Gujarat, one of the key producers of the spice, fell to 98,438 hectares from 476,097 hectares a year ago as of Monday, data from the state agriculture department showed. Low arrivals in Unjha, Gujarat, further supported prices, it said.
The most-active April contract of CORIANDER was up 3.1% at INR 11,380 per 100 kg due to robust festival demand amid reports of a fall in acreage in the ongoing sowing season, SMC Global said. In Gujarat, one of the key producers of the spice, coriander acreage was 125,510 hectares as of Monday, down from 130,449 hectares.
