MUMBAI – India's vegetable oil imports, including both edible and non-edible oils, rose over 8% on year to 1.38 million tonnes in December from 1.28 million tonnes a year ago, according to data released by the Solvent Extractors' Association of India Tuesday. Total edible oil imports in December also rose to 1.36 million tonnes from 1.23 million tonnes a year ago.
Crude soyoil imports rose to 505,112 tonnes in December from 420,651 tonnes a year ago and crude sunflower oil imports rose to 349,929 tonnes from 264,836 tonnes a year ago, the association said. Imports of crude palm oil rose to 503,703 tonnes from 326,587 tonnes last year.
There was no import of refined, bleached, and deodorised palmolein oil during December compared with 167,089 tonnes last year. During Nov-Dec, only 3,500 tonnes of refined, bleached and deodorised palm oil was imported compared with 452,505 tonnes a year ago. "The ratio of refined oil sharply decreased to 0.14% from 18%, while crude oil ratio increased to 99.86% from 82% due to rise in import of crude palm oil," SEA said.
The government increased the duty difference between crude and refined oils from 8.25% to 19.25% on May 31, which resulted in fall of refined palm oil imports. However, under the South Asian Free Trade Area agreement--SAFTA--a large quantity of refined soybean and sunflower oil were shipped to India from Nepal at zero duty.
Crude palm oil imports during the first two month of oil year 2025-26 were 1.13 million tonnes compared with 873,896 tonnes a year ago, it said. India's crude soyoil import during the same period was 875,773 tonnes comapred to 828,299 tonnes a year ago, according to the association. During Nov-Dec, the country imported 492,882 tonnes of sunflower oil compared to 605,496 tonnes a year ago.
In the same period, total edible oil imports by India were 2.51 million tonnes compared with 2.84 million tonnes. Vegetable oil imports during Nov-Dec was 2.57 million tonnes compared with 2.93 million tonnes a year ago.
As of Jan. 1, domestic edible oil stocks at ports were 958,000 tonnes, down from 988,000 tonnes a year earlier, and pipeline stocks fell to 792,000 tonnes from 1.44 million tonnes, the association said.
As of Friday, the total area sown under oilseeds in the ongoing rabi season was 9.7 million hectares, up nearly 4% from 9.3 million hectares a year ago, data from the agriculture ministry showed. Groundnut acreage rose 4.5% to 352,000 hectares, while acreage under mustard, the largest winter oilseed, rose 3.2% to 8.94 million hectares from 8.66 million hectares a year ago. Sunflower acreage increased nearly 31% to 55,000 hectares from 42,000 hectares, according to the report.
The following table details edible oil imports in December, in tonnes, compared with year-ago levels, with the change in percentage, according to data from the SEA:
