North Indian states to witness cold to severe cold wave Wed-Thu, says IMD

MUMBAI – Cold wave to severe cold wave conditions are "very likely" in a few parts of Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh Wednesday and Thursday, the India Meteorological Department said. Cold wave conditions are expected in parts of the same region Friday and in parts of Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan Wednesday and Thursday, in west Uttar Pradesh Wednesday, and Jharkhand and Odisha from Wednesday to Friday, the department said.
Cold day conditions are likely in pockets of Uttarakhand till Wednesday, the department said. Ground frost is also likely in the region in the same period, it said.
A cold wave condition is when the minimum temperature drops to 10 degrees Celsius or less for the plains and 0 degree Celsius or lower for hilly regions, according to the weather bureau. Cold day conditions are associated with a fall in maximum temperatures, typically occurring due to persistent low clouding. A cold day occurs when the maximum temperature during the day is at least 4.5 degrees Celsius below normal. Ground frost is a covering of ice, in one of its many forms, produced by the sublimation of water vapour on objects colder than 0 degree Celsius.
Dense to very dense fog is "very likely" to prevail during the morning hours over some parts of Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Punjab till Thursday, over parts of west Uttar Pradesh till Monday, and over some parts of east Uttar Pradesh from Saturday to Tuesday, the weather department said.
Dense fog is expected over Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Punjab, and west Uttar Pradesh till Tuesday. Similar conditions are expected over some parts of east Uttar Pradesh Thursday and Friday, and over parts of northwest, northeast, and east India till Sunday, the weather department said. Visibility drops to 0–50 metres in "very dense fog" conditions and between 51 and 200 metres in "dense fog" conditions.
In northwest India, no significant change in minimum temperature is expected during the next 48 hours, after which a gradual rise by 3–5 degrees Celsius for the subsequent five days is expected. No significant change in minimum temperature is expected over Maharashtra during the next 24 hours, after which a gradual fall by 2–3 degrees Celsius is seen over the next three days. Thereafter, there will be a gradual rise by the same range over the subsequent three days, the department said.
No significant change in minimum temperature is likely over Gujarat over the next 48 hours. Thereafter, a gradual rise by 2–3 degrees Celsius is seen for the subsequent two days. No significant change in minimum temperature is likely over the rest of the country, the weather department said. End
