Gujarat rabi acreage slightly dn on yr at 4.81 mln ha as on Mon

MUMBAI – The area under rabi crops in Gujarat was at 4.81 million hectares as on Monday, marginally lower than 4.82 million hectares a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The area covered so far has surpassed the state's normal rabi acreage of 4.64 million hectares, which is the average of the last three years.
Wheat acreage in the state was 1.44 million hectares, up from 1.36 million hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area under maize was 143,502 hectares, up from 132,946 hectares. The total area under all cereal crops rose to 1.62 million hectares from 1.52 million hectares a year ago.
The area under chana was at 895,906 hectares, up from 846,437 hectares a year ago, according to the report. The total area under all rabi pulses rose to 949,261 hectares from 917,564 hectares.
The total area under all oilseeds was 283,090 hectares, up from 260,252 hectares a year ago, the report showed. Under oilseeds, the area sown with mustard was up at 281,640 hectares from 258,131 hectares a year ago.
Sugarcane acreage declined to 166,605 hectares from 179,431 hectares a year ago, according to the report. The area under tobacco rose to 172,388 hectares from 163,781 hectares. The area under cumin was down at 398,438 hectares from 476,097 hectares a year ago, and the area under coriander fell to 125,510 hectares from 130,449 hectares.
The area under onion was down at 91,896 hectares from 93,495 hectares a year ago and potato acreage rose to 168,014 hectares from 156,077 hectares a year ago. The area under vegetables fell to 199,720 hectares from 218,291 hectares a year ago.
Rabi crops are sown between October and November, after the monsoon is over, and harvested between April and May. Wheat, barley, peas, gram or chana, and mustard are the major rabi crops grown in Gujarat. End
