MUMBAI – The US Department of Agriculture has raised its projection for global oilseed production for 2025-26 (May-Apr) to 693.15 million tonnes from 690.26 million tonnes estimated in December, it said in its World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report for January. The rise in estimated output is mainly due to higher production of soybean, which is seen partially offset by lower cottonseed and rapeseed output, the department said.
Among the different varieties of oilseeds, estimates of higher sunflower seed production in Argentina are seen partially offset by lower production of oilseeds in Russia, the department said. It also projected lower production of rapeseed in Russia.
Production of oilseeds in countries excluding the US is estimated at 566.91 million tonnes, up from 564.47 million tonnes seen in December. The output of oilseeds in the US in 2025-26 is also pegged higher at 126.24 million tonnes from 125.79 million seen last month. Global ending stocks of oilseeds in 2025-26 are estimated at 145.07 million tonnes, up from 143.60 million tonnes projected last month, according to the department.
The USDA has also raised its global soybean output estimate by 3.1 million tonnes to 425.68 million tonnes due to a rise in production in the US and Brazil, which is partially offset by lower production in China, data from the department showed. The estimate for soybean production in the US is raised slightly to 115.99 million tonnes from 115.75 million tonnes in December.
Production of soybean in Brazil is pegged higher at 178 million tonnes from 175 million tonnes estimated last month due to beneficial weather conditions in the center-west region of the country during the peak growing season. Positive early-season conditions and consistent rainfall in the southern parts of Brazil have also bolstered yield prospects, especially compared to previous years when the region faced drought, the department said.
The department has pegged global soybean exports in 2025-26 at 187.57 million tonnes, down from 187.70 million tonnes forecast in December, due to lower shipments from the US, which is partially offset by higher exports from Brazil. Global soybean imports in 2025-26 are projected at 186.04 million tonnes, slightly down from the 186.14 million tonnes projected last month.
Global ending stocks of soybean are pegged at 124.41 million tonnes, up from 122.37 million tonnes forecast in December, mainly due to higher stocks in the US and Brazil. Global beginning stocks of soybean are estimated at 123.40 million tonnes, slightly up from 123.24 million tonnes seen in December, the department said.
The department estimates global soybean meal output in 2025-26 at 287.71 million tonnes, up from 286.64 million tonnes seen the previous month. Soybean meal is a derivative of soybean, manufactured by crushing oilseeds, and is mainly used in producing poultry feed. Estimates for soybean crush and soybean meal exports are raised for Brazil and the US, while higher soybean meal imports are projected for the European Union, the department said. On account of higher soybean meal imports, the department has lowered the soybean crush and soybean imports estimates for the EU in its latest report.
The estimate of soybean meal production in India in 2025-26 is left unchanged at 7.42 million tonnes. India is one of the largest importers of soy oil and an exporter of soybean meal.
The projection for global vegetable oil production has been raised to 234.21 million tonnes from 233.29 million tonnes estimated in December. End
