MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in key markets in Uttar Pradesh rose Monday as demand picked up a little at lower prices, traders said. Mills in Maharashtra kept prices of the sweetener steady as demand remained lacklustre, they said.

Some mills across Uttar Pradesh raised prices of sugar by INR 10 per 100 kg as there was demand at the earlier price levels, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. "There were also rumours of a minimum selling price hike for sugar, which supported prices," Gupta said.

Moreover, prices had already fallen by a cumulative INR 100-INR 120 per 100 kg over the past few day, so there was some rebound, Gupta said. He added that prices are unlikely to fall further. In the second half of January, prices could see in uptick on wedding season demand.

Mills in Maharashtra kept sugar prices steady, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Prices are likely to fall further in the coming days as there is no demand from ice-cream and cold-drink manufacturers amid cold wave conditions in several parts of the country. Moreover, as sugarcane crushing is on in full swing, there is no concern of lower availability, so prices will remain subdued, he said.

The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Up INR 10 at INR 3,775-INR 3,910 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh

--Up INR 10 at INR 3,790-INR 3,925 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 3,845-INR 4,005 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Flat at INR 3,750-INR 3,835 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

At 1838 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange fell 1% to 14.75 cents per pound, tracking the fall in crude oil prices on NYMEX. A fall in crude oil prices leads to decreased diversion of sucrose for ethanol production, increasing the availability of sugar.  End
