NEW DELHI – Sugar production in Maharashtra in the ongoing 2025-26 season (Oct-Sept) rose 47% on year to nearly 5.95 million tonnes as of Sunday amid higher sugarcane availability and a marginally improved recovery rate, according to data from the state's sugar commissionerate.

As of Sunday, mills in Maharashtra crushed 66.54 million tonnes of sugarcane, up from 46.16 million tonnes in the corresponding period last year. Sugar output at the same time last year was 4.04 million tonnes, data showed. Meanwhile, the average sugar recovery rate rose to 8.94% from 8.76%. The state had 198 mills currently running, compared with 199 units last year.

Sugar output rose as mills in key sugarcane-growing divisions such as Kolhapur, Pune, Solapur, Sangli, and Satara reported robust crushing volumes amid better sugarcane availability. However, sugar recovery rates showed sharp regional disparities.

Kolhapur division remained the strongest performer so far this season, crushing 14.38 million tonnes of sugarcane and producing 1.51 million tonnes of sugar. The division reported a recovery rate of 10.53%, significantly higher than the state average of 8.94%.

Although Solapur division's throughput is largely on par with Kolhapur, sugar output lagged significantly due to a lower sugar recovery rate. Mills in Solapur crushed 14.51 million tonnes of sugarcane, but produced 1.17 million tonnes of sugar, with a recovery rate of 8.06%.

In the Pune division, mills crushed 15.93 million tonnes of sugarcane and produced 1.47 million tonnes of sugar, with a recovery rate at 9.20%, the data showed.

For the entire 2025-26 season, Maharashtra is expected to produce 11.0 million tonnes of sugar, up from 8.1 million tonnes last year, according to the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories.  End
