MUMBAI – The price of maize in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, fell Monday on low demand while prices of wheat in Kota, Rajasthan, rose because of a slight improvement in demand, traders said. Prices of non-basmati rice were steady and are likely to remain so for the next two months in soft trade, they added.
MAIZE price in Indore fell INR 45 per 100 kg to INR 1,800 per 100 kg as demand was weak, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Prices are expected to remain steady in the near term till new arrivals of the rabi crop start coming in, he said.
WHEAT prices in Kota rose INR 20 per 100 kg to INR 2,550-INR 2,601 per 100 kg, said Ravi Mehta, a local trader. Arrivals in the Kota market also rose by 5,000 bags Friday to 10,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said.
"Arrivals rose as farmers are now bringing in the old stock as new arrivals will start soon," Mehta said. The price of wheat in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, remained unchanged at INR 3,000 per 100 kg, wholesale trader Devendra Vora said. The price also remained stable in Indore at INR 2,800 per 100 kg, Kochar said. "Wheat prices are seen falling in the short term as the arrivals of new rabi crop will start in February," he said.
Meanwhile, the Food Corp. of India will offer 100,000 tonnes of wheat Wednesday through an e-auction under the 2025-26 open market sales scheme, according to sources. This will be the first round of auction after the corporation temporarily suspended wheat sales last month due to weak sales and poor buying interest from millers and processors amid ample market supplies.
Prices of the main varieties of RICE were unchanged in Vashi. Prices of the 1401 and 1121 varieties of basmati rice were at INR 8,000-INR 8,200 per 100 kg and INR 8,400-INR 8,800 per 100 kg, Vora said. "There is demand for basmati rice, and prices will go up as and when demand rises," he said.
Prices of sona masoori rice, a premium non-basmati variety of rice, were also steady at INR 5,600-INR 5,800 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, said Ravi Shankar, a trader. "Prices are expected to remain steady for around two months, as there is very little demand in the market," Shankar said.
In the financial year 2025-26 (Apr-Mar), exports of basmati rice have reached 4.07 million tonnes as of November and those of non-basmati rice have reached 9.26 million tonnes, taking total rice exports to around 13.33 million tonnes, Satish Goel, president of the All India Rice Exporters' Association, said. Basmati rice exports in FY27 are expected at 6.5–6.8 million tonnes, subject to global market conditions, price realisation, and the prevailing trade and policy environment, he said. End
