NEW DELHI – The Food Corp. of India will offer 100,000 tonnes of wheat on Wednesday through an e-auction under the 2025-26 open market sales scheme, according to sources. This will be the first round of the auction after the corporation temporarily suspended wheat sales last month due to weak sales and poor buying interest from millers and processors amid ample market supplies.

On Wednesday, FCI will offer Punjab 25,000 tonnes of wheat, the highest state-wise allocation. Assam has been allotted 14,000 tonnes, Haryana 9,500 tonnes, and Uttar Pradesh 5,300 tonnes, according to data compiled by market sources. Other allocations include 7,000 tonnes of wheat in Karnataka, 6,000 tonnes in Jammu and Kashmir, and 4,000 tonnes in Delhi.

In its previous auctions, the strongest buying interest was seen from Punjab, Haryana, and Assam. "FCI is re-entering the market after approximately 40-45 days. We have to check the market dynamics," a government official said. Unlike earlier, FCI will now conduct weekly auctions, instead of fortnightly. Before the suspension, the FCI was offering 200,000 tonnes of wheat every two weeks to the market.

Under the 2025-26 open market sales scheme, the FCI started wheat auctions on Nov. 12. Since then, only two auctions were conducted after the FCI shifted to a fortnightly schedule from weekly rounds due to weak sales. However, even after offering wheat on a fortnightly basis, the wheat offtake from the FCI struggled to pick up. In its last auction held on Nov. 26, the FCI had sold nearly 80,000 tonnes, or about 40% of the 200,000 tonnes being offered.  End
