NEW DELHI – In a series of dialogues during Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal's two-day visit to Brussel, both Goyal and European Union Trade and Economic Security Commissioner Maros Sefcovic provided guidance to negotiating teams to resolve pending issues and expedite the India-EU free trade agreement, the commerce ministry said in a press release on Saturday. Goyal visited Brussels on Thu-Fri.
Both the sides carried out deliberations across key areas of the proposed agreement, taking note of the steady progress achieved across various negotiating tracks including market access for goods, rules of origin and services, it said.
"The Ministerial-level discussions reaffirmed the strong political resolve on either side to address pending issues through constructive engagement," the press release said. "Both sides emphasized the strategic importance of concluding a fair, balanced, and ambitious agreement that aligns with their shared values, economic priorities, and commitment to a rules-based trading framework."
India and EU have missed the target of concluding the trade deal by the end of 2025. Before the ministerial meetings, discussions were held Tue-Wed between Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal and the Director-General for Trade of European Commission Sabine Weyand. "The meetings focused on stocktaking the progress achieved across various negotiating tracks," the ministry said. "The officials worked to "narrow divergences" and ensure clarity on outstanding issues, clearing the path for the Ministerial dialogue."
The EU accounts for over 15% of India's total outbound shipments. India exported $78.85 billion worth of goods to the EU in the financial year 2024-25 (Apr-Mar) and had a trade surplus of $15.17 billion with the bloc. End
