MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh fell again on Friday as demand was weak, traders said. Mills in Maharashtra kept prices steady after cutting them the previous day, they added.
Mills across Uttar Pradesh cut prices by another INR 10 per 100 kg as demand could not pick up at the previous levels, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. Prices have fallen by a total of INR 100-INR 120 per 100 kg in different mills, he said. Gupta added that as prices have fallen significantly during this month and fall further but at a slower pace.
Traders at the resales market were buying on a day-to-day basis instead of stocking up, Gupta said. However, he expects prices to start rising in the second half of the month when wedding season resumes across India.
Mills in Maharashtra kept sweetener prices steady after INR-5-per-100-kg cut the previous day, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Prices are likely to fall further in the coming days as there is no demand from ice-cream and cold-drink manufacturers amid cold wave conditions in several parts of the country. Moreover, as sugarcane crushing is going on in full swing, there is no concern of lower availability, so prices will remain subdued, Kuvadia added.
The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:
--Down INR 10 at INR 3,770-INR 3,910 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh
--Down INR 10 at INR 3,800-INR 3,940 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 3,845-INR 4,005 per 100 kg in Mumbai
--Flat at INR 3,750-INR 3,835 per 100 kg in Kolhapur
