MUMBAI – Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over some parts of Tamil Nadu till Saturday, while heavy rainfall is expected over a few parts of the same region on Sunday, the India Meteorological Department said. These weather conditions are due to the presence of a deep depression over the south Bay of Bengal and the adjoining east equatorial Indian Ocean, which moved nearly northwestwards and was over the southwest Bay of Bengal in the early hours of Friday, the weather department said.

Cold day conditions are likely to prevail in a few parts of east Rajasthan and Bihar till Sunday, and in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, west Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh till Saturday, the weather department said.  Cold wave conditions are very likely in a few parts of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Odisha, and north interior Karnataka during the weekend, in Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Bihar on Saturday and in Rajasthan from Sunday to Wednesday, the weather department said.

A cold wave condition is when the minimum temperature drops to 10 degrees Celsius or less for plains and 0 degree Celsius or lower for hilly regions, according to the weather bureau. Cold day conditions are associated with a fall in maximum temperatures, typically occurring due to persistent low clouding. A cold day occurs when the maximum temperature during the day is at least 4.5 degrees Celsius below normal.

Ground frost conditions are very likely in a few parts of Uttarakhand till Sunday. Ground frost is a covering of ice, in one of its many forms, produced by the sublimation of water vapour on objects colder than 0 degree Celsius.

Dense to very dense fog is likely in the morning hours in parts of Rajasthan till Sunday. Visibility drops to 0–50 metres in "very dense fog" conditions, and between 51 and 200 metres in "dense fog" conditions.  Dense fog conditions are likely in parts of west Rajasthan on Monday and in east Rajasthan on Monday and Tuesday, the weather department said. Similar weather conditions are likely in most parts of northwest and northeast and some parts of east and central India till Jan. 16, the department said.

In northwest and east India, no major change in the minimum temperature is likely for the next seven days. No significant change in the temperature is likely over central India and Maharashtra during the next 24 hours, and a gradual rise of 2–3 degrees Celsius is likely during the subsequent four days, the weather department said.

In Gujarat, no significant change in minimum temperature is expected during the next three days, and a gradual rise of 2–3 degrees Celsius is expected during the subsequent four days. No significant change in minimum temperature is likely over northeast India during the next 24 hours and a gradual rise of 3–4 degrees Celsius in the subsequent four days is expected thereafter.  End
