NEW DELHI – The family of Pratik Jain, director of election consultancy firm Indian Political Action Committee, or I-PAC, has filed a complaint of theft with the Kolkata Police after a search operation by the Enforcement Directorate at his residence, the Press Trust of India reported, quoting police officers. Jain also heads the Trinamool Congress party's information technology cell.
The complaint was lodged at the Shakespeare Sarani police station Thursday, hours after the directorate concluded a nine-hour-long search at Jain's house in Loudon Street area of the city. The search was conducted in connection with an alleged money-laundering case. The operation began at 0600 IST and the agency officials left Jain's residence at about 1500 IST. Shortly thereafter, Jain's wife lodged the complaint of theft by the directorate's officials. According to the news agency, the complaint is that "essential documents" were stolen from the residence during the agency's search.
West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress President Mamata Banerjee has also alleged that the directorate was trying to take away crucial documents relating to her party's political strategy and candidates from Jain's possession. She said that since the Bharatiya Janata Party is unable to fight her politically in the state, it is using central investigative agencies to try and win the assembly election that is due in the state this year.
In a statement, the Enforcement Directorate denied any foul play and insisted that the raid had nothing to do with the forthcoming assembly elections. End
