MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in the key markets of Maharashtra fell on Thursday, traders said. In Uttar Pradesh too, mills that did not cut prices the previous day, reduced the prices, they added.
Mills in Uttar Pradesh that did not lower rates the previous day cut prices by INR 20-INR 30 per 100 kg due to poor demand, Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India, said. "Prices have fallen significantly in the state and the downtrend will continue until Jan 15," Gupta said.
Traders at the resale market were buying on a day-to-day basis instead of stocking up, Gupta said. However, he expects prices to start rising in the second half of the month when wedding season resumes across India.
Mills in Maharashtra cut prices by INR 5 per 100 kg as demand did not pick-up at the previous levels, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Prices are likely to fall further in the coming days as there is no demand from ice-cream and cold-drink manufacturers amid cold wave conditions in several parts of the country. Moreover, as sugarcane crushing is going on in full swing, there is no concern of lower availability, so prices will remain subdued, Kuvadia added.
The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:
--Down INR 20-INR 30 at INR 3,775-INR 3,920 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh
--Down INR 20-INR 30 at INR 3,800-INR 3,950 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh
--Down INR 5 at INR 3,845-INR 4,005 per 100 kg in Mumbai
--Down INR 5 at INR 3,750-INR 3,835 per 100 kg in Kolhapur
At 1846 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was steady at 14.98 cents per pound. End
US$1 = INR 90.01
