MUMBAI – Basmati rice and wheat prices were mixed in key spot markets, rising in some and remaining steady in others, traders said. Maize prices were largely steady across the country, they said.

Prices of the main varieties of RICE were mixed in Vashi in Mumbai. Prices of the 1401 variety of basmati rice rose by INR 200 per 100 kilograms to INR 8,000-INR 8,200 per 100 kg due to firm demand, Devendra Vora, a wholesale trader, said. On the other hand, prices of the 1121 variety remained steady at INR 8,400-INR 8,800 per 100 kg, he said.

Prices of sona masoori rice, a premium non-basmati variety of rice, were also steady at INR 5,600-INR 5,800 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, said Ravi Shankar, a trader.

The Indian Rice Exporters' Federation has urged the government to announce measures in the Budget to boost export competitiveness and encourage sustainable paddy cultivation. India accounts for about 40% of the global rice trade. The federation has proposed tax benefits for sustainable rice production, interest subvention on export credit, targeted freight support, and a one-time waiver of retrospective export-duty claims in the Budget.

Asked about the federation's demand, Vora said, "The government should accept the request as it will be beneficial for our farmers, but I think the government will not accept as the higher prices and taxes that traders and farmers pay generate revenue to the government."

Prices of WHEAT at Kota in Rajasthan rose by INR 25-INR 50 per 100 kg due to a slight rise in demand, local trader Ravi Mehta said. Arrivals in Kota rose by 500-1,000 bags from the previous day to 4,000 bags on Thursday (1 bag = 50 kg).

Wheat prices in Vashi were steady at INR 3,000 per 100 kg, Vora said. Prices of the grain at Indore in Madhya Pradesh were also steady at INR 2,800 per 100 kg, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. "New arrivals of the rabi wheat crop will start in February, so prices are likely to fall (by then)," Kochar said.

MAIZE prices in Indore were largely steady at INR 1,845 per 100 kg, with supply and demand in balance, Kochar said. Prices are expected to remain steady in the near term as new arrivals may start, he said. Maize prices at Davanagere in Karnataka also remained largely steady at INR 1,700–INR 1,950 per 100 kg, Shiva Kumar, a local trader, said. End
