MUMBAI – Prices of chana rose while those of masur were unchanged, and prices of tur showed mixed trends in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Prices of chana rose due to low arrivals of the old stocks amid a rise in festival demand, they said. Prices of tur were steady in some markets while they fell in others as traders booked profits after a surge in prices, they said. Masur prices remained steady as weak demand matched its low supply, they said.

CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, rose by INR 50 from Wednesday to INR 5,950-INR 6,000 per 100 kg, said Dinesh Mangal, a local trader. Prices rose due to a fall in arrivals of the old stocks of chana, he said. "The market used to get around 1,000 bags (1 bag = 50kg) daily some months before, now it has come down to 300–400 bags per day," he said. Prices are also supported by a rise in festival demand ahead of Makar Sankranti next week, he said.

Prices also rose due to a revival in demand for chana dal, or processed chana, Mangal said. However, a further rise in prices is unlikely amid the ongoing imports of chana from Australia and reports of a slight rise in rabi chana acreage, he said. The final rabi chana acreage is seen rising by 5–7% on year across the country, buoyed by favourable weather, he said. Prices are likely to remain range-bound in the near term, he said.

Prices of chana in Delhi rose by INR 25 from the previous day to INR 5,875-INR 6,900 per 100 kg, traders said.

Prices of old TUR in Solapur, Maharashtra, fell by INR 50 from Wednesday to INR 6,200-INR 6,950 per 100 kg, and those of new tur fell by INR 50 to INR 6,700-INR 7,600 per 100 kg, said Rahul Srinivas, a local trader. Five to six trucks with 20,000-25,000 kg each of old tur stocks and 55–60 trucks of the freshly harvested tur arrived in the market, he said.

Prices fell as traders took advantage of the surge in prices, Srinivas said. Prices had risen by INR 100-INR 300 per 100 kg in the first half of this week. "Traders wanted to make more money at this high price range so they offloaded their old stock, and prices fell," he explained.

Prices could fall further by INR 100 in the near term as traders are likely to continue making profit sales this week, he said. "After that there is no chance of more downtrend because new arrivals of the crop are still much lower than last year," he said. Arrivals of the freshly harvested tur crop are also yet to begin from most parts of Maharashtra, he said.

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 7,750-INR 7,800 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

MASUR prices in Indore were steady at INR 5,650-INR 5,700 per 100 kg, Mangal said. Prices are steady as demand for the lgeume was on a par with supply, he said. "There are low arrivals and low demand, so prices are the same," he said. Prices are unlikely to fluctuate in the near term, unless the government announces procurement of the legume, he said. Usually, the Madhya Pradesh government purchases the bulk of the crop in the state, he said.

Prices of the moti variety of masur in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, were steady at INR 5,400–INR 6,000 per 100 kg, according to the association. Prices of the choti variety in Lalitpur were also steady at INR 7,000–INR 8,200 per 100 kg.  End
