MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar fell in key markets of Uttar Pradesh due to subdued demand at existing prices, traders said. Mills in Maharshtra kept prices steady, they said.
Mills across Uttar Pradesh cut prices by INR 15-INR 20 per 100 kg due to sluggish demand, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. "Prices are likely to be on a downward trend till Jan. 15 as there will be need-based demand," Gupta said.
Traders at the resale market were buying on a day-to-day basis instead of stocking up, Gupta said. However, he expects prices to start rising in the second half of the month when wedding season resumes across India.
In Maharashtra, prices were steady, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Prices are likely to remain at these levels for a few more days as demand is unlikely to pick up, Kuvadia said.
The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:
--Down INR 15-INR 20 at INR 3,775-INR 3,925 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh
--Down INR 15-INR 20 at INR 3,800-INR 3,950 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 3,850-INR 4,010 per 100 kg in Mumbai
--Flat at INR 3,755-INR 3,840 per 100 kg in Kolhapur
At 1912 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was up 1.6% at 14.74 cents per pound. Prices rose despite anticipation of higher sugar availability globally. End
