India Apr-Dec freight traffic at major ports up 8.2% on year

AHMEDABAD – Freight traffic handled by major ports in India rose 8.2% on year to 673.0 million tonnes in Apr-Dec, data released by the Indian Ports Association showed. The rise was driven mainly by 10.0% year-on-year growth in crude and petroleum products to 203 million tonnes. Crude and petroleum products account for nearly one-third of the total cargo handled by major ports.
Container traffic in tonnage terms rose 10.0% at 157.6 million tonnes in Apr-Dec, while thermal coal cargo rose 1.4% on year to 96.4 million tonnes. The miscellaneous traffic in Apr-Dec rose 6.7% on year to 86 million tonnes.
The coking coal volumes rose 11.3% on year at 48.1 million tonnes. The iron ore volumes increased 2.2% on year at 37.2 million tonnes, finished fertilisers cargo jumped 75.2% on year at 10.9 million tonnes, and raw fertilisers rose 9.9% on year at 8.4 million tonnes.
Among ports, Deendayal Port handled the highest traffic in Apr-Dec at 116.2 million tonnes, followed closely by Paradip at 115.3 million tonnes, and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority at 75.4 million tonnes.
