MUMBAI – Prices of wheat, rice, and maize were steady in most of the key spot markets across the country on Tuesday amid lack of fresh cues, traders said. Prices of rice are expected to be unchanged as sales are weak due to low demand in the market, the said.

Prices of WHEAT in Vashi, Navi Mumbai were unchanged at INR 3,000 per 100 kilograms, Devendra Vora, a wholesale trader, said. Prices of the grain in Indore, Madhya Pradesh were steady at INR 2,800 per 100 kg, Gaurav Kochar, a local trader, said, and prices in Kota, Rajasthan were also stable at INR 2,525–INR 2,580 per 100 kg, Ravi Mehta, a local trader, said. Arrivals in the Kota market were largely steady at 3,000-3,500 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), Mehta said.

The government has planned to resume e-auctions of wheat under the open market sales scheme for 2025-26 from next Wednesday, an official from the Food Corp. of India told Informist. FCI had suspended wheat auctions due to weak sales and poor buying interest from millers and processors amid ample market supplies in the previous month.

"The tender will be uploaded on Friday. The auction will happen next Wednesday," the FCI official said. "The offer quantity is yet to be finalised. It will be more than 200,000–300,000 tonnes." Before the suspension, the FCI was offering 200,000 tonnes of wheat per auction. The e-auction is expected to be held weekly. Under the 2025-26 open market sales scheme, the FCI started wheat auctions on Nov. 12. Since then, only two auctions were conducted after the FCI shifted to a fortnightly schedule from weekly rounds due to weak sales.

As of Friday, the area sown under wheat, the biggest rabi crop, was up 1.86% on year at 33.41 million hectares, according to the agriculture ministry.

MAIZE prices in Indore were steady at INR 1,835 per 100 kg due to lack of fresh cues, Kochar said. As of Friday, the area sown under maize across the country was up 6.65% on year at 2.33 million hectares, according to the agriculture ministry.

Prices of major varieties of RICE were unchanged in Vashi, Vora said. The prices of the 1401 and 1121 basmati varieties were unchanged at INR 7,800-INR 8,000 per 100 kg and INR 8,400-INR 8,800 per 100 kg, respectively, he said.

Prices of sona masoori rice, a premium non-basmati variety of rice, were also unchanged at INR 5,600-INR 5,800 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, said Ravi Shankar, a trader. Prices were unchanged due to low trade in the market owing to lack of demand and are expected to remain steady in the near term, he said.

The acreage under paddy was 1.76 million hectares as of Friday, up 18% from 1.49 million hectares last year, according to the agriculture ministry.  End
