Gujarat rabi acreage down 1% on year at 4.73 mln ha as on Mon

MUMBAI – The area under rabi crops in Gujarat stood at 4.73 million hectares as on Monday, marginally lower than 4.75 million hectares a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The area covered so far has surpassed the state's normal rabi acreage of 4.64 million hectares, which is the average of the last three years.
Wheat acreage in the state was 1.42 million hectares, up from 1.34 million hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area under maize was up at 142,253 hectares from 132,496 hectares. The total area under all cereal crops rose to 1.59 million hectares from 1.50 million hectares a year ago.
Chana acreage was up at 888,942 hectares from 839,724 hectares a year ago, according to the report. The total area under all rabi pulses rose to 938,828 hectares from 910,683 hectares a year ago.
The total area under all oilseeds was 282,384 hectares, up from 259,650 hectares a year ago, the report showed. Under oilseeds, mustard acreage was up at 281,190 hectares from 257,529 hectares a year ago.
Sugarcane acreage fell to 156,963 hectares from 174,100 hectares a year ago, according to the report. The area sown with tobacco rose to 161,525 hectares from 158,069 hectares. The area under cumin was down at 397,644 hectares from 473,615 hectares a year ago, and the area under coriander fell to 125,336 hectares from 129,343 hectares.
The area under onion was down at 87,196 hectares from 92,005 hectares a year ago and potato acreage rose to 167,073 hectares from 155,501 hectares a year ago. The area under vegetables fell to 192,846 hectares from 210,097 hectares.
Rabi crops are sown between October and November, after the monsoon is over, and harvested between April and May. Wheat, barley, peas, gram or chana, and mustard are the major rabi crops grown in Gujarat. End
