MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar fell in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra due to sluggish demand from bulk consumers, traders said. Traders expect prices to increase in the second half of the month as the wedding season in India is during that time when majority of the demand come from confectioneries.

Mills across Uttar Pradesh cut prices by INR 10-INR 20 per 100 kg due to sluggish demand at the moment, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. "Demand was poor even at the reduced price levels," Gupta said.

There was limited demand and traders at the resale market were buying on a day-to-day basis instead of stocking up the pipeline, Gupta said. Prices are likely to fall further as there are no festivals in the first half of the month, he said. However, he expects prices to start rising in the second half of the month when wedding festivities resume across India.

Sweetener prices in Maharashtra fell INR 10 per 100 kg due to subdued demand, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Prices are likely to remain at these levels for a few more days as demand is unlikely to pick up, Kuvadia said.

The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Down INR 10-INR 20 at INR 3,800-INR 3,950 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh

--Down INR 10-INR 20 at INR 3,800-INR 3,975 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

--Down INR 10 at INR 3,850-INR 4,010 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Down INR 10 at INR 3,755-INR 3,840 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

At 1916 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was up 0.3% at 14.67 cents per pound. Sugar prices rose, tracking gains in crude oil prices on NYMEX. A rise in crude oil prices leads to increased diversion of sucrose for ethanol production, decreasing the availability of sugar.  End
