MUMBAI – Futures contracts of spices fell on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange Monday as traders booked profits, analysts said. Prices of turmeric are likely to rise in the near term amid tight supply conditions, they said. Prices of jeera and coriander could also rise in the short term due to firm demand and reports of a fall in acreage in the ongoing rabi season, they said.
The most-active April contract of TURMERIC fell 0.2% to INR 18,450 per 100 kilograms as traders booked profits after prices rose beyond the INR 18,000-per-100-kg mark, analysts said. Prices had risen last week, driven by healthy buying interest amid tight supply conditions, SMC Global Securities said. The fall in prices is likely to be limited due to below-normal arrivals in spot markets and sustained export demand, Kedia Advisory said in a note.
However, fresh arrivals of the new turmeric crop are likely to arrive in spot markets by late January, which could put pressure on prices, SMC Global said.
The most-active March contract of JEERA was down 1.4% at INR 22,420 per 100 kg due to profit sales after prices rose above the INR-24,000-per-100-kg mark for the first time since April 2025, analysts said. Prices had risen due to strong export demand and a sharp decline in acreage across the country, Kedia Advisory said in a note. Jeera acreage in Gujarat, one of the key producers of the spice, fell to 397,644 hectares from 473,615 hectares a year ago as of Monday, data from the state agriculture department showed. Low arrivals in Unjha, Gujarat, further supported prices, it said.
The most-active January contract of CORIANDER was down 3.9% at INR 9,820 per 100 kg due to profit booking, analysts said. Prices had risen last week amid strong domestic and export demand and reports of a fall in acreage in the ongoing sowing season, SMC Global said. In Gujarat, one of the key producers of the spice, coriander acreage was 125,336 hectares as of Monday, down from 129,343 hectares a year ago.
