MUMBAI – The government has approved the nutrient-based subsidy rates for rabi 2025-26, effective from Oct. 1, 2025 till Mar. 31, 2026, covering phosphatic and potassic fertilisers, including diammonium phosphat and nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), and sulphur (S) grades, the government said in a release. The tentative budgetary requirement for rabi 2025-26 is about INR 379.52 billion, about INR 7.36 billion higher than the Budget requirement for kharif 2025 season, it said.
The subsidy would be provided to fertiliser companies at the notified rates, ensuring that fertilisers are made available to farmers at affordable prices.
Balanced fertilisation is crucial for maintaining soil health, enhancing crop productivity and ensuring long-term agricultural sustainability. In recognition of this, the Government of India continues to prioritise the nutrient-based subsidy scheme, a critical policy intervention that promotes the judicious use of fertilisers by supporting farmers in accessing key nutrients at affordable prices, the release said. For the rabi season 2025–26, the announcement of updated nutrient-based subsidy reflects the government's commitment to enhancing nutrient management while keeping farmers' input costs in check, it said.
Over INR 2.04 trillion has been allocated between 2022-23 and 2024-25 towards nutrient-based subsidies, ensuring affordable access to the fertilisers. Nutrient-based subsidies have driven significant growth in domestic fertiliser output, with phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) fertilizers production increasing from 11.22 million tonnes in 2014 to 16.86 million tonnes in 2025, reflecting growth of over 50% during the period.
