MUMBAI – The water level in 166 key reservoirs of the country fell over 3% from the previous week to 142.177 billion cubic metres as of Thursday, which is 77.45% of the total live storage capacity, data from the Central Water Commission showed. The water level was up 5.6% from a year ago and 22.5% higher than the normal storage for the period, which is the average storage for the past 10 years, according to the data.

 

In the northern region, the water level in reservoirs was 14.272 billion cubic metres, which is around 72% of the total live storage capacity. In the same period last year, the water level was 44.5% of the live storage capacity. The northern region includes Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab.

 

In the eastern region, the water level in reservoirs was 15.127 billion cubic metres, nearly 70% of the total live storage capacity largely unchanged from the corresponding period last year. The eastern region includes Assam, Jharkhand, Odisha, Tripura, Nagaland, West Bengal, and Bihar.

 

The water level in the western region was 33.040 billion cubic metres. This is almost 87% of the total live storage capacity, against 84% last year. The western region includes Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Goa.

 

In the central region, which includes Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Chhattisgarh, the water level in reservoirs was 39.061 billion cubic metres as of Thursday. This is 80.4% of the total live storage capacity, compared with 75.2% a year ago.

 

The water level in the southern region was 40.676 billion cubic metres, 73.6% of the total live storage capacity, the data showed. At this time last year, the water level in the region was 76.3% of the total live storage capacity.

 

Of the 166 reservoirs in the country, 158 reported more than 80% of normal storage and eight were at 80% or below of normal storage. Of these eight, none had storage below 50% of the normal. During the week ended Wednesday, India received 0.2 millimetres of rainfall in the week ended Wednesday, 95% below the normal of 3.7 millimetre for the period, according to the India Meteorological Department.  End
