Andhra Pradesh rabi area up 13% on yr at 1.20 mln ha as of Wed

MUMBAI – The area sown under rabi crops in Andhra Pradesh reached 1.20 million hectares as of Wednesday, up over 13% from 1.06 million hectares covered in the corresponding period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Of the targetted area of 1.94 million hectares for the ongoing rabi season, nearly 62% has been covered so far, the data showed.
The acreage under paddy was up at 300,000 hectares from 221,000 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area sown under maize also rose to 199,000 hectares from 95,000 hectares last year.
Chana acreage was down at 278,000 hectares from 279,000 hectares last year, according to the report. The area sown under urad was 178,000 hectares, up from 170,000 hectares a year ago. The acreage under moong also rose to 32,000 hectares from 26,000 hectares covered last year. The total area sown under all pulses slipped to 535,000 hectares from 562,000 hectares a year ago.
The total area sown under all oilseeds so far was 43,000 hectares, up from 41,000 hectares sown in the previous year, the report showed. Under oilseeds, the acreage under groundnut fell to 33,000 hectares from 36,000 hectares last year.
Tobacco acreage in the state was down at 65,000 hectares from 85,000 hectares last year, the report showed.
Currently, the rabi paddy is at the "nursery to transplantation" stage, while jowar is at the "grain filling" stage, the report said. Rabi maize is at the vegetative to tasselling stage. The chana and urad crops are at "planting to emergence and flowering" stage. Sesame and tobacco are at the "vegetative stage" and groundnut is at the "seed emergence to flowering and peg formation" stage, the report said.
Kharif paddy, castor, groundnut, and sugarcane are in the harvesting stage, the report said. Tur is at the pod development stage, while cotton is at the third picking stage.
From Oct. 1 to Dec. 31, the state has recorded 344 millimetres of rainfall during the ongoing northeast monsoon season, which is 20?ove the normal for the period, the report showed. The water level in reservoirs across Andhra Pradesh was 77.4% of the live storage capacity as of Friday, compared to 65.2% a year ago, according to data from the state's water resources department.
