NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of jeera and turmeric rose while those of coriander fell on the National Commodities and Derivatives Exchange on Thursday. Turmeric prices were up on strong seasonal demand and tight supply, analysts said. Prices of jeera rose due to a fall in acreage. Coriander prices fell on profit booking at higher levels, they said.
At 1653 IST, the most-active April contract of TURMERIC was up 3.4% at INR 17,898 per 100 kilograms due to firm export and domestic demand, analysts at SMC Global Securities said. Tight supply condition owing to limited carry over stocks from the previous season are lending further support, while fresh arrivals are expected only by late January, it said.
However, price increases are likely to be limited, given reports of higher acreage during the ongoing sowing season. Turmeric acreage across the country is estimated at 302,000 hectares, up around 4% on year, Kedia Advisory said.
The most-active January contract of JEERA was up 0.5% at INR 22,450 per 100 kg as weather-related issues and delay in rabi sowing led to a sharp decline in acreage across the country. Strong export demand for the spice also supported prices, SMC Global said. As of Dec. 29, jeera sowing in Gujarat stood at 399,000 hectares, down sharply by 14.2% on year, as uneven rainfall delayed field preparation, marking one of the slowest sowing seasons in recent years, Kedia advisory said. Low arrivals at Unjha and logistical disruptions across India and the West Asia have further tightened availability, it said.
The most-active January contract of CORIANDER was down 1.5% at INR 10,250 per 100 kg due to profit booking after prices crossed the INR 10,400 levels Wednesday, analysts at SMC Global said. However, good exports demand and report of a drop in acreage in the ongoing sowing season are likely to keep prices up in the near term, the brokerage said.
