MUMBAI – Wheat prices showed a mixed trend while the prices of maize and rice were unchanged in key spot markets across the country, traders said. The price of wheat in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, rose owing to a rise in demand amid low arrivals, they said. The price of maize remained steady amid stable demand, while prices of rice were flat owing to ample supply, they said.

WHEAT price in Indore rose INR 100 from Wednesday to INR 2,880 per 100 kg, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. The price rose owing to a decline in arrivals, he said. "There are enough old stocks of wheat but farmers are not bringing much of it to the market for some reason," he said. Prices were also supported by a rise in demand ahead of the next wedding season, he said.

The price of wheat in the Vashi market in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, was steady at INR 2,925 per 100 kg, said Devendra Vora, a wholesale trader. Wheat prices are likely to remain range-bound in the near term till the government makes a decision regarding exports, he said. "The government was requested to open up wheat exports two months ago but nothing has come out of it," he said.

If the government allows exports of wheat, prices are likely to increase in the domestic markets, Vora said. "Even though the government has a good buffer stock of wheat, it will look out for the country's food security first," he said, adding that the government is also wary of private players taking advantage of the situation if exports were allowed. "The government knows that big exporters will empty out all their stocks to sell wheat outside the country, which will lead to a surge in demand from them (exporters) in spot markets," he said. This is likely to prompt farmers to sell their stocks to private players rather than the government, risking the Centre's ability to maintain an ample buffer stock, he said.

MAIZE price in Indore was unchanged at INR 1,800 per 100 kg, Kochar said. The price is steady amid stable demand from the poultry industry and the ethanol sector, he said. Prices are likely to move in a range in the near term, he said. The price of maize in Davanagere, Karnataka, was unavailable as the market was shut for New Year's Day, said Shiva Kumar, a local trader.

Prices of major varieties of RICE were unchanged in Vashi, Vora said. The prices of the 1401 and 1121 basmati varieties were unchanged at INR 7,800-INR 8,000 per 100 kg and INR 8,400-INR 8,800 per 100 kg, respectively, Vora said. Prices of all non-basmati rice varieties are likely to remain steady in the near term because of ample availability, he said. "Only prices of basmati rice could fluctuate because there is good demand for it," he said.

The price of sona masoori rice, a premium non-basmati variety of rice, was also unchanged at INR 5,600-INR 5,800 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, said Ravi Shankar, a trader. Prices were unchanged due to low trade in the market owing to lack of demand, he said.  End
