MUMBAI – The Nifty 50 ended higher for the second consecutive session after a decline for four days before that. Shares of automobile and information technology companies helped the 50-stock index to close in a positive territory.

 

The Nifty 50 settled at 26146.55, up 16.95 points, or 0.1%. The BSE Sensex closed at 85188.60 points, down 32 points. The Sensex closed lower after a rise in the previous session, when it had snapped a five-day losing streak. The Nifty 50 index is just 179 points from its historical high of 26325.80. India VIX, the fear gauge of Dalal Street, ended 3% lower at 9.1850. It was down for the third straight session and have shed 21% in a month. 

 

"Despite a sharp up move on Wednesday, the Nifty index is still hovering in the same range (25700-26300 spot zone) and an either side break from the said congestion zone will set the tone for next short-term directional," said Vipin Kumaar, assistant vice president of equity research at Globe Capital Market. 

 

In the broader market, all the small-cap indices ended marginally lower, after a rise in the previous session when they snapped a three-day losing streak. However, the mid-cap indices managed to close in the green for the second consecutive session, up 0.4–0.5%.

 

Major automobile companies such as Eicher Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, Ashok Leyland, and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles reported total vehicle sales at 10,384-86,090 for December. Shares of all these companies ended the session higher.

 

Shares of Eicher Motors ended 0.5% higher and was up for the second straight session. It reported commercial vehicles sales of 10,384 units in December, up 24.7% on year. Mahindra & Mahindra closed over 1% higher, extending its gains for the third consecutive session. The company reported total vehicle sales of 86,090 units in December, up 25% on year. 

 

Ashok Leyland had total vehicle sales of 21,533 units in the previous month, up 27% on year. Shares of the company ended over 3% higher and closed in the green for the fourth consecutive session. It gained almost 6% during this period. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles ended the session marginally higher and was up for the third successive day. The company sold 50,519 units in December, up 14% on year. 

 

Shares of cigarette companies fell after the government imposed excise duty on cigarettes in the range of INR 2,050-INR 8,500 per thousand sticks. Shares of ITC fell almost 10%. It fell after rising in the previous session, when it had snapped a four-day losing run. Godfrey Philips India closed 17% lower and hit the record low of INR 2,230.30.

* On the NSE, 1,683 stocks rose, 1,448 fell, and 92 were unchanged,

* Nifty Auto: up 1%; Nifty Metal: up 0.8%; Nifty Pharma: down 0.4%
