Telangana rabi acreage up 12% on yr at 1.71 mln acres as on Wed

MUMBAI – Farmers in Telangana have sown rabi crops across 1.71 million acres (1 acre = 0.4 hectares) as of Wednesday, up over 12% from 1.52 million acres a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The normal area for the season is 6.87 million acres, of which nearly 25% has been covered so far.
Paddy acreage was up at 606,452 acres from 469,178 acres a year ago, the report showed. The area sown under jowar rose to 136,743 acres from 75,247 acres. The acreage of maize was 576,688 acres, up from 465,786 acres a year ago.
The acreage of chana slipped to 155,078 acres from 201,511 acres a year ago, according to the report. Urad acreage fell to 23,273 acres from 36,866 acres. Similarly, the area under moong was down at 2,075 acres from 2,704 acres a year ago. The total area under all pulses fell to 184,170 acres from 246,774 acres.
The total area under all oilseeds so far was 156,648 acres, down from 215,976 acres a year ago, the report showed. Under oilseeds, the acreage of groundnut fell to 143,372 acres from 203,005 acres. The acreage of safflower rose to 7,647 acres from 5,206 acres a year ago, while that of sunflower fell to 5,064 acres from 6,981 acres.
Tobacco acreage in the state was up slightly at 8,946 acres from 8,441 acres a year ago, according to the report. Sugarcane acreage surged to 4,540 acres from 903 acres a year ago.
The water level in reservoirs across Telangana was 811.9 billion cubic metres as of Wednesday, compared with 755 billion cubic metres a year ago, according to the report. From Oct. 1 to Dec. 31 — during the Northeast monsoon — the state recorded 189.6 millimetres of rainfall, 72% above the normal for the period. End
