NEW DELHI – India's ethanol production capacity expanded to 19.53 billion litres as of the end of October, up significantly from less than 2.0 billion litres in 2014, the consumer affairs ministry said in its year-end review. Of the total capacity, 9.8 billion litres come from grain-based distilleries and 9.73 billion litres from molasses and dual-feed distilleries, as per the release.
India achieved 19.24% ethanol blending with petrol in the ethanol supply year 2024-25 (Nov-Oct), according to the release. Meanwhile, sugar diversion for ethanol production has strengthened the cash flow of sugar mills, enabling them to make timely payments to sugarcane farmers, the ministry said.
Sugar mills have earned more than INR 1.29 trillion from ethanol sales over the past 10 years, as per the release. The ethanol-blending programme has created over INR 420 billion worth of investments, leading to the establishment of new distilleries and contributing to direct and indirect employment in rural areas.
