MUMBAI – Prices of wheat and rice were steady, while prices of maize showed a mixed trend in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Prices of maize were steady in some markets while they fell in others due to muted demand amid arrivals of the new rabi crop in some states, they said. Prices of wheat are likely to rise in the near term on firm demand and low stocks of the old crop, they said.

Prices of WHEAT in Indore were steady at INR 2,780 per 100 kg, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Prices are unchanged amid stable demand for the grain, he said. Prices are likely to see an uptrend in January due to higher demand and a decline in arrivals, he said. "The wedding season begins in February, so there will be good demand in January," he said.

The market is receiving limited arrivals of the old stock, which is also likely to support prices, Kochar said. Prices could increase by INR 50-INR 100 per 100 kg next month, he said. The uptrend is expected to last till February, after which arrivals of the new crop are likely to put pressure on prices, he said.

Meanwhile, the acreage of wheat in the ongoing rabi crop season is likely to remain largely the same as last year. While there were reports suggesting that farmers had shifted to wheat from other crops such as chana earlier in the season, no such shift has occurred on a significant level, he said. As of Friday, wheat acreage was 32.3 million hectares, up from 32.2 million hectares in the corresponding period a year ago, data from the agriculture department showed.

Prices of wheat in the Vashi market in Navi Mumbai were also steady at INR 2,925, said Devendra Vora, a wholesale trader.

Prices of MAIZE in Indore were steady at INR 1,800 per 100 kg, Kochar said. Sowing of rabi sowing has almost been wrapped up, and is likely to match last year's levels, Kochar said.

Prices of maize in Davanagere, Karnataka, fell by INR 50 per 100 kg for the second consecutive day to INR 1,700-1,900 per 100 kg, said Shiva Kumar, a local trader. Arrivals in the market were steady at 2,000 bags (1 bag = 60 kg), he said. Prices fell due to sluggish demand for the coarse grain, he said. Arrivals of the new rabi crop have begun in small batches in states such as Tamil Nadu, which is also putting pressure on prices, he said. Prices are likely to fall further in the near term, he said.

Prices of major varieties of RICE were unchanged in Vashi, Vora said. Prices of the 1401 and 1121 basmati varieties were unchanged at INR 7,800-INR 8,000 per 100 kg and INR 8,400-INR 8,800 per 100 kg, respectively, Vora said. The price of sona masoori rice, a premium non-basmati variety, was also unchanged at INR 5,600-INR 5,800 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, said Ravi Shankar, a trader. Prices were unchanged due to low trade in the market owing to lack of demand, he said.  End
