NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of all spices rose on the National Commodities and Derivatives Exchange on Tuesday. Turmeric prices were up on strong seasonal demand and tight supplies, analysts said. Prices of jeera also rose due to a fall in acreage, while coriander prices rose on export demand and reports of a drop in acreage, they said.

The most-active April contract of TURMERIC rose 1.3% to INR 17,286 per 100 kilograms due to firm export and domestic demand, analysts at SMC Global Securities said. Demand conditions remain supportive, with steady buying from Europe and the US, while quality issues in Indonesia stemming from a smaller crop have further supported demand from India, Kedia Advisory said in a note. Prices were also supported by supply tightness due to weaker carryover stocks from the previous season, SMC Global said. Arrivals of the new turmeric crop are expected only by the end of January, it said.

However, price increases are likely to be limited, given reports of higher acreage during the ongoing sowing season. Turmeric acreage across the country is estimated at 302,000 hectares, up around 4% on year, Kedia Advisory said.

The most-active January contract of JEERA was up 1% at INR 22,430 per 100 kg as weather-related issues and delay in rabi sowing have led to a sharp decline in acreage across the country. Strong export demand for the spice also supported prices, SMC Global said.

The most-active January contract of CORIANDER was up 0.2% at INR 10,250 per 100 kg on good export demand and reports of a drop in acreage in the ongoing sowing season, SMC Global said. In Gujarat, one of the key producers of the spice, coriander acreage was 112,333 hectares as of Dec. 22, down from 120,512 hectares a year ago.
