MUMBAI – Prices of wheat and maize showed mixed trends while prices of rice were steady in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Prices of wheat remained steady in most markets but rose in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, owing to a rise in demand, they said. Prices of maize in Davanagere, Karnataka, fell amid sluggish demand and high arrivals, they said.

Prices of WHEAT in Indore rose INR 20 from the previous day to INR 2,780 per 100 kg, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Prices rose as demand picked up, he said. Kochar expects wheat prices to be range-bound with a slight upward bias as the marginal rise in demand is likely to continue in the near term. Prices of wheat in Vashi in Navi Mumbai were steady at INR 2,925 per 100 kg, said Devendra Vora, a wholesale trader.

Wheat prices in Kota, Rajasthan, were steady at INR 2,500-INR 2,565 per 100 kg, said Ravi Mehta, a local trader. Arrivals in the market were unchanged at 3,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said. Prices are steady because demand is stable, he said. Prices are likely to remain range-bound in the near term unless a shift in demand occurs or the government opens up wheat exports, he said.

"There are rumours that the government may open up exports soon because they (the government) have a lot of stock of wheat which has nowhere to go," Mehta said. He added that prices are likely to be supported in the near term only if there is a change in the policy on exports. He does not expect the procurement process to support prices like it has in the past. "The government might not be interested in buying wheat this year because the (minimum support) price hike is probably going to dampen demand," he said. The government has increased the minimum support price of wheat by INR 160 per 100 kg to INR 2,585 per 100 kg for the rabi marketing season 2026-27 (Apr-Mar).

Prices of MAIZE in Indore were unchanged at INR 1,800 per 100 kg, Kochar said. Prices of maize in Davanagere fell INR 50 per 100 kg to INR 1,750-1,950 per 100 kg, said Shiva Kumar, a local trader. Arrivals in the market rose by 1,000 bags from the previous day to 2,000 bags (1 bag = 60 kg), he said. Prices are weighed down by low demand amid a rise in arrivals, he said. Prices are likely to remain in the lower range and demand is unlikely to rise in the near term, he said.

Prices of major varieties of RICE were unchanged, traders said. In Vashi, prices of the 1401 and 1121 basmati varieties were unchanged at INR 7,800-INR 8,000 per 100 kg and INR 8,400-INR 8,800 per 100 kg, respectively, Vora said.

The price of sona masoori rice, a premium non-basmati variety, was steady at INR 5,600-INR 5,800 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, said Ravi Shankar, a trader. Prices were unchanged due to low trade in the market owing to lack of demand, he said.  End
