MUMBAI – Cold day to severe cold day conditions are likely in parts of Bihar till Wednesday, the India Meteorological Department said. The weather department has warned of cold wave conditions in pockets of eastern Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh till Wednesday, in western Rajasthan on Friday and Saturday, in Himachal Pradesh from Wednesday to Saturday, and in Telangana and north interior Karnataka till Thursday.

A cold wave condition is declared when the minimum temperature drops to 10 degrees Celsius or less for plains and 0 degree Celsius or less for hilly regions, according to the weather bureau. Cold day conditions are associated with a fall in maximum temperatures, typically occurring due to persistent low clouding. A cold day occurs when the maximum temperature during the day is at least 4.5 degrees Celsius below normal, while a severe cold day is when the maximum temperature is at least 6.5 degrees Celsius below normal.

Dense to very dense fog conditions are likely to continue during the night and early morning hours in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and western Uttar Pradesh till Thursday, and in eastern Uttar Pradesh and Odisha till Friday, the weather bureau said. Dense fog conditions are seen in most parts of northwest and northeast and some parts of eastern and central India till Tuesday, the bureau said.

Visibility in "very dense fog" conditions drops to 0–50 metres and in "dense fog" conditions, between 51 and 200 metres.

Under the influence of a western disturbance, heavy rainfall or snowfall is expected over most parts of Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad till Thursday and light to moderate rainfall or snowfall over parts of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand till Friday, the weather bureau said. The weather system is also likely to cause light to moderate rainfall over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh on Wednesday and Thursday and over western Rajasthan on Wednesday, the bureau said.

Minimum temperatures in northwest India are expected to gradually rise by 3–4 degrees Celsius in the next two days, after which they could fall by 3–4 degrees Celsius in the subsequent three days, the weather department said. In central India, minimum temperatures are expected to rise slowly by 2–3 degrees Celsius in the next three days, it said.

In eastern India, no significant change in minimum temperature is expected in the next 24 hours, and thereafter a gradual rise of 2–3 degrees Celsius is seen in the subsequent three days, the department said. No major change in minimum temperature is seen in Maharashtra for the next 24 hours, after which a fall of 2–3 degrees Celsius is likely in the subsequent three days. Thereafter, minimum temperatures in southern Maharashtra are likely to rise by 2–3 degrees Celsius in the subsequent four days.

In Gujarat, no major change in minimum temperature is expected in the next 48 hours, and thereafter a fall of 2–3 degrees Celsius is seen in the subsequent two days, after which it could rise by 2–3 degrees Celsius in the next five days. No significant change in minimum temperature is expected over the rest of the country in the next seven days, the weather bureau said.  End
