Gujarat rabi acreage down 1% on year at 4.58 mln ha as on Mon

MUMBAI – The area under rabi crops in Gujarat stood at 4.58 million hectares as on Monday, down nearly 1% from 4.61 million hectares a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The normal rabi area, which is the average of the last three years, is 4.64 million hectares, of which nearly 99% has been covered so far.

 

The area under wheat in the state was 1.36 million hectares, up from 1.30 million hectares a year ago, the report showed. Maize acreage was up at 131,438 hectares from 129,134 hectares. The total area under all cereal crops rose to 1.52 million hectares from 1.46 million hectares a year ago.

 

Chana acreage was up at 861,846 hectares from 817,012 hectares a year ago, according to the report. The total area under all rabi pulses rose to 910,459 hectares from 885,607 hectares a year ago. 

 

The total area under all oilseeds was 263,603 hectares, up from 256,881 hectares a year ago, the report showed. Under oilseeds, the acreage of mustard was up at 262,763 hectares from 254,948 hectares a year ago.

 

Sugarcane acreage slipped to 147,767 hectares from 168,093 hectares a year ago, according to the report. The area sown with tobacco fell to 149,680 hectares from 152,157 hectares. The area under cumin was down at 398,596 hectares from 464,570 hectares a year ago, and the area under coriander fell to 117,626 hectares from 125,033 hectares.

 

The area under onion was down at 85,721 hectares from 90,252 hectares last year, pot    ato acreage was slightly higher at 154,851 hectares from 154,467 hectares a year ago. The area under vegetables fell to 188,777 hectares from 197,336 hectares.

 

Rabi crops are sown between October and November, after the monsoon is over, and harvested between April and May. Wheat, barley, peas, gram or chana, and mustard are the major rabi crops grown in Gujarat.  End
