NEW DELHI – Sugar production in Maharashtra in the ongoing 2025-26 season rose over 58% on year to 4.48 million tonnes as of Sunday amid higher sugarcane availability and improved recovery rate, according to data from the state's sugar commissionerate.
As of Sunday, mills in Maharashtra crushed 51.53 million tonnes of sugarcane, up from 33.32 million tonnes in the corresponding period last year. Sugar output at the same time last year was 2.83 million tonnes, data showed. Meanwhile, the average sugar recovery rate rose to 8.69% from 8.50%. The state had 193 mills currently running, compared to 195 units last year.
The surge in sugar output comes as mills in major sugarcane-growing districts such as Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara, Pune, and Solapur reported robust crushing volumes. Kolhapur remains the strongest performer so far in the season with the highest recovery rate. The district crushed 11.43 million tonnes of sugarcane and produced 1.17 million tonnes of sugar. Kolhapur reported a recovery rate at 10.23%, significantly higher than the state average of 8.69%.
In Pune, mills crushed 12.48 million tonnes of sugarcane and produced 1.11 million tonnes of sugar, with a recovery rate of 8.93%. In Solapur, mills crushed 10.7 million tonnes of sugarcane and produced 839,100 tonnes of sugar, with a recovery rate of 7.81%, according to the data.
For the entire 2025-26 season ending September, Maharashtra is expected to produce 11.0 million tonnes of sugar, up from 8.1 million tonnes last year, according to the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories. End
