Rabi acreage rises 1.1% YoY to 61.4 mln ha; wheat area tad up

MUMBAI – The area sown under rabi crops across India was 61.4 million hectares as of Friday, up 1.1% from 60.7 million hectares a year ago, according to a release from the agriculture ministry Monday. The acreage under wheat, the biggest rabi crop, stood at 32.3 million hectares, up from 32.2 million hectares in the corresponding period a year ago. Wheat is grown only in the rabi season in India.
The acreage under paddy was 1.5 million hectares as of Friday, an increase of 14.5% from 1.3 million hectares last year. The area under coarse cereals, promoted as "Shri Anna" by the government, stood at 4.9 million hectares, nearly unchanged from 4.89 million hectares a year ago.
Within coarse cereals, acreage under jowar, or sorghum, fell to 2.0 million hectares, down over 7% from 2.2 million hectares a year ago, while maize acreage was up at 2.1 million hectares as of Friday from 2.0 million hectares a year ago. Acreage under ragi, a millet, rose nearly 41% to 69,000 hectares from 41,000 hectares a year ago.
The total area sown under pulses in the rabi season of crop year 2025–26 (Jul-Jun) as of Friday was 13.3 million hectares, up nearly 3% from 13.0 million hectares a year ago. Among key pulses, chana acreage rose slightly, over 5%, to 9.6 million hectares from 9.1 million hectares a year ago and area sown under masur was nearly unchanged at 1.7 million hectares as of Friday. Acreage under urad fell to 363,000 hectares from 386,000 hectares a year ago and that under moong rose to 52,000 hectares from 50,000 hectares a year ago.
The total area under oilseeds was 9.4 million hectares as of Friday, up over 1% from 9.3 million hectares a year ago. Groundnut acreage fell nearly 16% to 277,000 hectares from 329,000 hectares a year ago, while acreage under mustard, the largest winter oilseed, rose over over 1% to 8.8 million hectares from 8.7 million hectares a year ago. Sunflower acreage increased over 32% to 45,000 hectares from 34,000 hectares a year ago, according to the report.
