MUMBAI – Oilseed prices were mixed in key markets across the country. Soybean and groundnut prices rose across benchmark markets as arrivals started to fall and mustard seed prices fell in Kota, Rajasthan, and were steady in Jaipur, Rajasthan, traders said. Demand for domestic oilseeds are increasing as import of crude edible oils have become costlier with depreciation in the rupee.

MUSTARD seed prices in Jaipur were steady at INR 7,125-INR 7,150 per 100 kilograms, according to Marudhar Trading Agency. Mustard seed arrivals in the country totalled 200,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) on Friday, up from 185,000 bags the previous day, according to GGN Research.

In Kota, mustard seed prices fell INR 200 from the previous session to INR 6,500 per 100 kg, said Mahesh Sameriya, a local trader. Arrivals were at 5,000 bags, down 1,000 bags from the previous day, Sameriya added.

SOYBEAN prices in Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh rose INR 200 to INR 2,800-INR 4,900 per 100 kg due to lower arrivals, said Narendra Porwal, a local trader. Arrivals in the market were at 8,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), down 2,000 bags from the previous day, he said.

In Kota, too, soybean prices rose INR 100 to INR 4,801 per 100 kg, as there was higher demand for domestic oilseeds, according to Sameriya. Arrivals were at 18,000 bags, down 2,000 bags from the previous day, he said. With imports becoming costlier, millers have little choice but to procure domestic oilseeds for crushing, rather than relying on imported edible oils to meet the domestic demand, traders said.

Prices of GROUNDNUT in Ratlam rose INR 300 to INR 2,800-INR 5,900 per 100 kg on Wednesday. Arrivals fell 1,000 bags from the previous day to 21,000 bags (1 bag = 40 kg), Porwal said. Prices rose as arrivals have started to decline, he said. Groundnut arrivals typically peak in October and November.
