MUMBAI – Futures contracts of turmeric and jeera rose, while those of coriander fell on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange on Monday. Prices of turmeric rose amid tight supply and robust demand, analysts said. Prices of jeera also rose due to a fall in acreage, while prices of coriander fell due to low demand in spot markets, they said.

The most-active April contract of TURMERIC rose 0.7% to INR 17,254 per 100 kilograms due to firm export and domestic demand, analysts at SMC Global Securities said. Demand conditions remain supportive, with steady buying from Europe and the US, while quality issues in Indonesia due to a smaller crop have further aided demand from India, Kedia Advisory said in a note. Prices were also supported by supply tightness due to weaker carryover stocks from the previous season, SMC Global said. Arrivals of the new turmeric crop are expected only by the end of January, it said.

However, the rise in prices is likely to be limited due to reports of higher acreage during the ongoing sowing season. Turmeric acreage across the country is estimated at 302,000 hectares, up around 4% on year, Kedia Advisory said.

The most-active January contract of JEERA was up 0.7% at INR 22,550 per 100 kg as weather-related issues and delay in rabi sowing have led to a sharp decline in acreage across the country. Jeera acreage in Gujarat, one of the key producers of the spice, fell to 354,169 hectares from 442,238 hectares a year ago as of Dec. 22, data from the state agriculture department showed. Strong export demand for the spice also supported prices, SMC Global said.

The most-active January contract of CORIANDER was down 0.7% at INR 10,362 per 100 kg due to low demand in spot markets, analysts said. However, good export demand and reports of a drop in acreage in the ongoing sowing season are likely to prevent further downside, SMC Global said. In Gujarat, one of the key producers of the spice, coriander acreage was 112,333 hectares as of Dec. 22, down from 120,512 hectares a year ago.
