NEW DELHI – Cold wave conditions are very likely over parts of north and central India from Sunday, while dense to very dense fog is likely to persist across north and northeast India, the India Meteorological Department said.
Cold wave conditions are very likely over isolated pockets of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, north Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh from Sunday to Tuesday, and in Jharkhand on Sunday, the weather bureau said. Meanwhile, cold day conditions are likely at isolated places of east Uttar Pradesh and Bihar during the weekend, it added.
A cold wave condition is declared when the minimum temperature drops to 10 degrees Celsius or less for plains and 0 degree Celsius or less for hilly regions, according to IMD. Cold day conditions are associated with a fall in maximum temperatures, typically occurring due to persistent low clouding.
Dense to very dense fog during night and morning hours are very likely to continue over Himachal Pradesh till Tuesday, and later on Wednesday and Thursday. The same weather conditions are likely over Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh till Tuesday, and Uttar Pradesh from Wednesday to Friday.
Fog conditions are also forecast over east Madhya Pradesh and Arunachal Pradesh till Monday, Jammu division till Tuesday, sub-Himalayan West Bengal till Wednesday, and Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and Odisha till Thursday, according to the bureau.
A fresh western disturbance is expected to affect the western Himalayan region from Tuesday, which will likely result in light-to-moderate rain or snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand from Tuesday to Friday.
Minimum temperatures are not expected to change significantly over northwest India during the weekend. However, a gradual rise of 2-4 degree Celsius is likely mid-week, followed by a 2-degree fall thereafter. Temperatures over central and east India are likely to remain largely unchanged for the next three to four days. End
