MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh rose as the sales quota allocated for January is considered to be less to meet the demand during next month, traders said. Mills in Maharashtra, kept prices steady to check if demand picks up at current levels, they said.

Mills in Uttar Pradesh raised prices by INR 20-INR 30 per 100 kg as they expect demand to pick up at the start of January and also as the sales quota is considered to be insufficient to meet the demand next month due to festivals, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. In the resales market prices however, were steady, Gupta said. "Prices have already fallen significantly, so it is unlikely that rates will fall further," he added.

The government has set the domestic sugar sales quota for January at 2.2 million tonnes, the Department of Food and Public Distribution said in a post on social media platform X. The quota for next month is unchanged from the December quota, but over 2% lower than the quota for January 2025.

The sales quota for January is in line with market expectations. Market participants had told Informist the sugar sales quota for next month would be 2.2-2.3 million tonnes, as demand is expected to improve, with festivals such as Makar Sankranti and Pongal and the wedding season.

In Maharashtra, prices of the sweetener were steady as market participants are in a wait and watch mode, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Prices are likely to remain at these levels for the rest of the month, he said.

The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Up INR 20-INR 30 at INR 3,850-INR 4,100 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh

--Up INR 20-INR 30 at INR 3,830-INR 4,115 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 3,860-INR 4,020 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Flat at INR 3,765-INR 3,850 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

At 1953 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was down 0.4% at 15.23 cents per pound. Sugar prices fell, tracking losses in crude oil prices on NYMEX. A fall in crude oil prices leads to lower diversion of sucrose for ethanol production, thus increasing the availability of sugar.  End

US$1 = INR 89.85
